Privacy Policy

Short version: SplitBite processes receipt text on our servers to read your bill — that text is never stored. The free version shows ads via Google AdMob. No personal accounts, no tracking beyond what AdMob requires.

Who we are

Camera and receipt scanning

SplitBite uses your camera to photograph restaurant receipts. The photo itself is never uploaded anywhere — it is processed entirely on your device using on-device OCR (text recognition) to extract the raw text.

That raw text (item names and prices, as they appear on the receipt) is sent over an encrypted connection to a serverless function hosted on Netlify, which uses the Claude API (by Anthropic) to structure the data into a list of items with prices. This text is not stored — it is processed in memory and discarded once the response is returned to your device.

An internet connection is required at scan time for this step.

Advertising (free tier)

The free version of SplitBite displays banner ads provided by Google AdMob. AdMob may collect and use data to serve personalised ads, including:

Device advertising identifier (IDFA on iOS, GAID on Android)
IP address and approximate location
Device type and OS version
App usage interactions

You can limit ad personalisation through your device settings (iOS: Settings → Privacy & Security → Apple Advertising; Android: Settings → Privacy → Ads). Upgrading to Pro removes all ads.

Local data storage

SplitBite stores the following data locally on your device only:

Pro upgrade status — cached after purchase verification.
Saved groups (Pro) — names and colours for your recurring dining groups.
Split history (Pro) — a log of past splits including items, people, and totals.

This data never leaves your device (except during in-app purchase verification, handled by Apple or Google) and is deleted when you uninstall the app.

In-app purchases

SplitBite offers a one-time Pro upgrade. All purchase transactions are handled entirely by Apple (App Store) or Google (Google Play). We do not process or store your payment details.

Payment links

The summary screen can open Bizum, Venmo, or PayPal with a pre-filled payment amount. Tapping these links opens the respective app on your device — SplitBite does not process, initiate, or have visibility into any payment transaction.

Permissions

Camera — required to photograph receipts for scanning.
Internet — required to send receipt text to our parsing service at scan time, and to verify in-app purchases.
Billing (Android only) — required to process in-app purchases via Google Play.

Children's privacy

SplitBite is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. The only external data processing is receipt text (not personal information) and AdMob, which has its own COPPA compliance measures.

Changes to this policy

If we change how data is handled we will update this page and the date above. We recommend checking back periodically.
